    Tips for searching a topic

    Tips for Searching Scholarly Databases:
    • Don’t search for journals until you are familiar with your topic
    • Know the database before jumping into the search
o Familiarize yourself with the subjects the database indexes
    • Plan your search
    o Think about your keywords
    o Use Boolean
o Scholarly databases are not as good for exploring/discovering a topic (like reference books or Academic OneFile) – have a need in mind
    • Finding the perfect scholarly journal is a gold mine of other resources – remember that a lot of research goes into writing for a peer-reviewed journal

    Andy Warhol's Childhood

What was Andy Warhols childhood like?
(all excerpts are from http://www.carnegiemuseums.org/cmag/bk_issue/1996/julaug/feat2.htm )

Andy Warhol growing up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was a shy boy with immigrant parents from Czechoslovakia.  Born in 1928, Warhol like many depression era families, were poor.  Unlike his brothers Paul and John, Andy spent most his time at home with his mother claiming illnesses.  Warhol who was a hypochondriac spent many days away from school.
Andy's father, Andrej, was known to be crafty as well. as was his brothers and mother.
"Nothing of potential re-use was thrown away during the Depression years, so an efficient system for shoe repair was essential. Andrej's workbench included a shoemaker's cast- iron forms, in various sizes, to hold the family's shoes while he stitched a tear or replaced a worn sole.

"Sometimes he'd buy a piece of leather to replace soles on our good shoes, the ones that we'd wear to church," remembers John Warhola. But more often than not, Andrej would cut up old tires to form the new soles."

Always observant of appearance, Andy was known to have a strong aversion and self-conscious towards his own looks.  Which included blotchy skin, a bulbous nose, and fly away hair.  Something that would later influence many of his self-portraits.

Andy Warhol; life as a young boy:

    • Warhol was a devout Byzantine Catholic all his life
    • Warhol was shy of being religious
    • In school he was excluded in art class because others were jealous of his talent
